Frequently Asked Questions About Sanitätshaus Hellwig in Halle
What does Sanitätshaus Hellwig in Halle (Saale) offer?
Sanitätshaus und Orthopädie-Technik F. Hellwig has been based in Halle (Saale) since 1831 and offers the full range of orthopedic and medical supply care from a single source. This includes individually made prostheses for the upper and lower extremities, orthoses and neuro-orthotics, pediatric orthopedic care, compression therapy, breast prosthetics, supports, sensomotoric insoles and custom orthopedic shoes. The CareTeam additionally provides stoma, incontinence and wound care as well as enteral nutrition. The company is organized into four areas – OrthoTeam, SaniTeam, CareTeam and FootTeam – so that specialists are available for every concern. As a family business now in its sixth generation, we place great value on personal advice and close coordination with patients, doctors and therapists.
Which locations does Sanitätshaus Hellwig have?

Further branches can be found at the Saaleklinik (Steg 1, 06110 Halle), at Rosenfelderstraße 3 (06116 Halle, together with reha team Halle), at Friedensstraße 18 in 06749 Bitterfeld, at Leipziger Straße 91 in 06766 Wolfen and at Leipziger Straße 2 in 06780 Zörbig (also with reha team Halle). This way we are easy to reach throughout the region. The exact opening hours of the individual branches differ – you can find an overview on our “Stores” page.
How do I redeem a prescription at Sanitätshaus Hellwig?
You have two easy options for redeeming your prescription with us: either submit it conveniently online via our prescription service on this website, or hand it in personally at one of our branches. Once received, we check the medical prescription, clarify the cost coverage with your health insurance and then arrange an appointment for your individual care. For many aids and devices, we take measurements at this appointment or fit the product directly to you. If there are any questions about the prescription, we will get in touch with you or the prescribing practice so that your care can proceed smoothly and without unnecessary waiting.
Does health insurance cover the cost of medical aids?
With a medical prescription, statutory health insurers in Germany usually cover the cost of medically necessary aids. Those with statutory insurance aged 18 and over generally pay a statutory co-payment, which varies depending on the aid; certain groups of people can be exempted from the co-payment. As an approved provider, we settle accounts directly with the health insurers, so that as little effort as possible is required on your part. We will discuss the exact personal contribution as well as any additional costs for comfort or special features transparently with you before your care begins. This way you know from the outset which services the insurer covers and which may need to be paid privately.
Do I need a prescription for compression stockings, supports or insoles?
For the cost to be covered by health insurance, a medical prescription is generally required – this applies to compression stockings, supports, insoles and most other aids alike. If a prescription is available, we handle the billing with your insurer. Without a prescription, you can of course also purchase many products as a self-payer, for example for prevention, for sport or as an additional pair. We are happy to advise you in detail on which type of care makes sense in your case, take the necessary measurements and ensure that the fit and compression class are optimally suited to your needs.
What services does the Hellwig OrthoTeam provide?
The OrthoTeam specializes in individual orthopedic care. This includes prostheses for the upper and lower extremities, with which we help patients regain mobility and independence after an amputation, as well as orthoses and care in the field of neuro-orthotics, for example after a stroke or in the case of neurological conditions. A further focus is pediatric orthopedics, where we sensitively adapt the care to the child’s growth and everyday life. Every solution is created in close coordination with doctors and therapists and is individually made – increasingly supported by digital measurement technology, 3D scanning and 3D printing, which allow us to work even more precisely and quickly.
What is the Sensomotoric Center and what does a gait analysis offer?
At the Sensomotoric Center Hellwig we analyze your movement pattern using a video-supported gait analysis. We record how you walk or run and often detect incorrect loading, asymmetries or muscular deficits before they lead to discomfort. Based on this evaluation, we can produce sensomotoric insoles that not only support but specifically activate muscle groups and thus improve the movement pattern. The analysis is also of interest to physically active people: anyone starting running training, for example, receives concrete guidance from us beforehand for healthier, more pain-free training. The gait analysis thus combines diagnostics and care into one coordinated concept.
Does Sanitätshaus Hellwig also care for children?
Yes, the care of children is an integral part of our range of services. In pediatric orthopedics we produce, among other things, orthoses and individual aids that are carefully tailored to the growth and urge to move of our young patients. Through reha team Halle, children’s rehabilitation aids and special constructions are also available – such as adapted seating shells, mobility aids or rehab buggies. It is important to us that children and parents feel well looked after with us, which is why we deliberately take time for advice and fitting and work closely with the treating pediatricians and therapists.
Since when has Sanitätshaus Hellwig existed?
The history of Sanitätshaus Hellwig goes back to the year 1831 – since then the Hellwig name has stood for orthopedic technology and medical supply care in Halle. Today the company is run in the sixth generation as a modern family business and combines many years of craftsmanship with current technologies such as digital measurement and 3D printing. This continuity over almost two centuries is also an obligation for us: the individual person with their personal needs remains at the center, and our aim is to achieve the best possible result from every solution.
